My CMJ 2012: Part 3 (message for bands : )))))

HI muffins!!!

I am so happy and excited to introduce to you a Part 3 of this little series....

Well, taking my little note pad to refresh the core aspects auuu!!  : 0

I write this for our fellow musicians, and may by for other people it might get a little tech :/ I apologize for that :)
All right, musicians out there! here we go!

Well, it is important to have a plan. According to some big dogs of the industry, and to be exact,  Adam Herzog , VP of A&R, Warner Bros. Records (auu) , it works the same way, if you are an independent artist or you are on major label. It is important to have a strategy, a plan that coordinates all efforts and simply makes sense. He gave us an example. Say your goal is to release 5 song EP for free. Then it is needed to coordinate the release of  single(s) and videos, create awareness in social media, press, radio campaign (although radio was named one of the main barriers to entry), and then tour to support the EP, follow up, and then tour again... They also suggested to start with regional campaign, and then branch out and reach out to close by markets. Know your target market and then carve your strategy accordingly.

May be many of you already know this, as i kinda thought that's how it works, but how much easier to be said than to be done! Again, Adam was talking about this one band that he took notice of, because they were executing their strategy, and as he saw them understanding the process, understanding how things work, he thinks that when they will be working with his label, they will already know how everything works. Hm, deep.

Well, nowadays not necessarily all artists want to be on a major label. Although this is a beast that provides you with unmatched marketing expertise and PR, and they are basically in charge of the radio.  Though we had a little poll in the room, and only 25% of all people there raised their hands when were asked if they want to be signed to label.

The way to introduce your band is a one-sheet. And it is one or even half piece of paper that reflects "you story", meaning it's like a diary where u write your achievements (and needs to be updated and ready just in case) For example, this blog "blogged" about us, "we got on a radio show", "we played this festival". If it is an email, it has to be 2 sentences, them bullet points (again reflecting ur achievements), and a link. (well, this is what Simi Dube of Octone Records, said she really liked when she received it from one of the band's managers). They like it to the point. As they all agreed, they never read bio.

Numbers: there was a lot of talking about that. Well, numbers are not that powerful... The only thing that matters is: "Numbers are a side effect of everything being done right".

What are those A&Rs looking for? when is it time to approach them? one of the panelist gave us his view: * band is doing something that has never been done before *you can't get a ticket to their local show * a producer/ other music professionals are contacting the band (not vice verse)

But what is a REAL secret???!!!! what is that key to open a magical door?!!!
It is MUSIC. It is that song that you've heard one time and can't get enough of. It is when you are emotionally touched by the first verse and want more. This is the most important highlight through the whole conference: them (music business professionals) as us, just listeners, are doing all this just for that one moment when you put on a song on and you are blown away. Yes. This is it.

So artists and bands out there, the message from the CMJ panelists is  - keep on writing! keep on writing and writing songs, push your limits, do something u have never done before, learn from other bands you like, think outside the box, be SINCERE and touch people!!! nothing above is valid until you have that song, the music. No viral social marketing campaign will work unless there is a really special song behind it.

Ufff..... So what do you guys think? did you already know all this? was it something new or interesting? please be free to leave comments. We are all doing this and it will be interesting to hear your fellow's feedback :) and may be your advices about music business.

Thank you for your time  - and i am off to writing some tunes!!!!!!!!!

All the best, Ania

PS: in my next post i will tell you about my favorite CMJ artists, those bands that touched my heart...

My CMJ 2012: Part 2

Whad up yall!!

It still feels like i'm in a dream... The impression of CMJ still does not let go. i guess you have to be very interested in how the music world and the music business operates to be so obsessed with CMJ. And that's besides an opportunity to see hundreds of bands in legendary New York City venues.

It was gray and rainy but very warm day of my adventures in New York. The conference's panels were taking place at New York University, at the Kimmel Center. Well, the building is magnificent, and the location is so unique! it  gave me a chance to explore New York and to see it from a different prospective.

The clouds were literally stuck in high buildings :) it was kinda cute. The weather was so warm, it was unbelievable!

The first thing that really impressed me, was the accents! people are literally coming from all over the world for this. Wow. One of the panels i went to, had panelists from Australia, Korea, Brazil, UK, and Israel. It was a panel was called "411 on Important International Markets".

In between the panels there were little bit of mingling going on. I was not sure first how open people will be about meeting each other. And i was relieved when i felt like everybody is nice and very very friendly! Everybody i met was so interesting and unique, and all of them were from different states or even countries.

The building itself and the views around the building were fantastic! I felt on top of the world!

Every panel was so interesting. Usually the room is packed, with people standing and sitting everywhere. They are taking notes on paper, on their iPads, laptops. the discussions were very heated. And the caliber of panelists send shiver down my spine: how about a panel where 5 panelist are A&R execs from Columbia Records, RCA Records, Warner Brothers Record, Epic... and they are giving us tips about what a modern day A&Rs are looking for. HOT HOT HOT!!!!

The music professionals were discussing their first impression of Mumford and Son's songs and why their song got so big. The examples of bands they were using and talking about were FUN, Of Monsters and Men, Lana Del Rey...  And they were so objective and current about everything, giving us the "insider " information!!

My favorite panel was the last one i attended and oh boy, was that the greatest discussion about modern day music business  i have ever been to!! So immensely inspirational.

But friends, i have to tell you about it in my Part # 3 for this little series. I will also tell you about amazing live shows...

All the best, and stay tuned!

My CMJ 2012: PART 1

Hello friends!

Yesterday i had truly life changing experience and one of the best days in my life: I experienced CMJ 2012 in New York City!!!

Yes, here it is, the access to the divine and mysteriously plush world of CMJ 2012 Music Marathon!

CMJ Music Marathon is proud to add one loud layer to the saturated audible environment in New York City. From the rumble of the subway beneath your feet to horns and sirens at street level to the howling wind, pigeons, planes and neighbors above your head, the sounds echoing around the city are as diverse as the people who fill it. CMJ is an opportunity to explore not only the venues hosting CMJ events and experience the music playing within them, but the spaces between them, making a moment to savor New York City for the layered and complex acoustic arena that it is. (From CMJ 2012 Festival Guide)

This is exactly how i feel about my experience at CMJ.

In this series of my post i will tell you guys all about it, and tell you all the exciting and valuable tips i learnt from the top professionals in the industry at the panels and hope to give you a taste of my CMJ music experience!

Stay tuned for PART 2 and PART 3!

All the best, Ania

Lovely Music Conference By The Sea...

Hi friends!

September is being of fresh and warm so far. We love these beautiful days with blue sky and warm sun.

September is the month for the annual Dewey Beach Music Conference (DBMC) down in beautiful Dewey Beach. This year it is being held on September 20 - 23.

DBMC may not be the biggest music conference in the northeast, but it has garnered more than its fair share of critical acclaim, rave reviews and enthusiastic return participants. This is due in no small part to the consistent quality of talent and its location.

Dewey Beach sits on a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay. The result is a casual, laid-back vibe that almost seems like a beach vacation. All performance venues are within a few blocks walking distance of the main conference area. No cabs, no hassle, no venues that are hopelessly disconnected from the center of activity.

Mentoring sessions and demo listening sessions allow you to get valuable one-on-one advice about your music and your career path. The charm of DBMC lies in its intimate and friendly atmosphere as registrants interact with panelists, speakers, exhibitors, musicians and professionals from all aspects of the music industry. DBMC also offers unique events such as industry cruises on the bay and VIP parties at outdoor beach clubs.

We are going to be performing at Rusty Rudder 113 Dickinson Street in Dewey Beach at 7:40 pm. All shows are free. We are going to share stage with awesome bands: lovely Dana Alexandra from York, PA, Dynasty Electric from NYC, and Kingsfoil from York, PA.

We are very excited and are pumped for the event!!!!

Yes! We Just Have Opened Our Boutique!!!

Hello!!!
Storming in with some great news!!!

Ania on behalf on glen landing just opened up a boutique on etsy.com where we are going to sell some glen landing stuff and her handmade things! It's called Be My Surf Princess

Lets see what Ania has to say about  this project in this little interview:

GL BLOG: "So how do you feel?"

Ania: "Oh, probably accomplished, because i had this idea for a long time and finally it is reality! It is a virtual boutique, and i hope one day it will be a physical store on the street : ) or even a chain of stores so i can have one in Philly, South Miami beach, and Minsk!!! Bubbly and carefree!"

GL BLOG: "What does the name mean?"

Ania: "I have chosen a name a long time ago, Be My Surf Princess. And the homie there is my baby seal. I like surfing culture, and you know Britney is Pop Princess, Grimes is Garage Pop Princess... And the seal is Surf Princess : ] (i know, it's way too complicated) It's more likely for the girls, something like Hello Kitty brand"

This is the logo for the tee shirts with the seal!

GL BLOG: "What kind of things are you selling there?"

Ania: "First of all, it is official Glen Landing boutique. We have so much merchandise and tee shirts, so many cool designs and colors. And we have the whole section for girls! We usually sell it only at our shows. Now it is so exciting to finally being able to sell it online! And usually girl shirts designs somehow incorporate the baby seal. So it is perfect for the boutique!
Along with out official Glen Landing merchandise I am going to sell all other stuff i make, including accessories, tee shirts, paintings (mm, of the seal...) and even i hope soon dresses and clothing!"

GL BLOG: "Who makes the items?"

Ania: "Well, we print our Glen Landing apparel, and usually Dan comes up with the designs. He is so good at it!!! he comes up with the dopest designs ever! and there are so many other design that he has ideas for.
And for the other items, i make them. I have been sewing since i can remember myself. I have so much stuff made and so much stuff in sketches/ideas. I will be adding more items to the boutique inventory as i make them"

A Tee with neon pink Seal :]

GL BLOG: "What is your inspiration?"

Ania: "Glen Landing. Baby seals. Bubblegum (original flavor) Japanese Harajuku fashion. Blue. I am all about color! I love bright colors, interesting color combinations, neon colors. And vintage 60s fashion. "

GL BLOG: "Why a baby seal?"

"I don't know why this image came to my imagination. But it did ( and i think i know why now). I remember sitting in class at the College of New Jersey, and just drawing this seal for the first time in my notebook. And since then, i could not stop drawing it in classes. I had all different kinds, a seal with spots ("spotted seal!!!"), with guitar, in hats and with accessories, a badass seal :) ... And then i started to draw it, using watercolors and oils. Then it started to appear on our gear, on my shirts, and even on my dresses now!
Also i love a seal as an animal and i would like to support the movement of PROTECTING BABY SEALS against their cruel murder for their beautiful white fur. So in the future i am planning on donating a percent of my sales to the organization that protects them."

This baby seal pretends he is
 a giant snowflake :)

GL BLOG: "What are you future plans for the boutique?"
Ania: "I want to open a branch on ebay.com :] I would like to have some music equipment related things, cute stuff for girls musicians. Also dresses. And of course more fun Glen Landing merchandise"

So if you would like to check out the boutique here is the link: http://www.etsy.com/shop/BeMySurfPrincess

Little Jam And Newsss

Hello!

We are happy you are here. Thanks for reading my silly posts .... : )

It's been some time since our last update.

Well, the big news first: we were selected to play at Dewey Beach Music Conference and Festival 2012. We are stoked! It is such a lovely conference, our favorite one.

We are going to be there for the panels and also we are going to play on September 21st at Rusty Rudder  ( 113 Dickinson Street Dewey Beach, DE) at 7:40 pm, pretty much opening the conference! Yeah!

Well, it's few last days in August, and in Russia this is considered the end of summer. Luckily here in USA it is not over till the end of September! (some inside info about some cultural differences lol) We are summer-thieves!

And it is a little sad... Back to school, back to work... back to winter time.

Lets celebrate it with us anyway!!! and here is a little piece for you guys I just uploaded to our soundcloud , and it is unpublished, and raw, and honestly, recorded with an iPhone (best quality for voice memos <3, we use it all the time) little acoustic jammmm.

It's just my raspy Wurlitzer piano and Dan playing guitar. I though it perfectly describes the mood for last days of summer (according to Russsss)

We hope you like it.

And what else is going on ? well, we keep on jamming and writing and might have some surprises soon.

Thanx again! Enjoy this lovely sunny Thursdee !

And this is the set up that we are currently using in our studio!!!
Pretty cool (and complicated ;0 so many wires ) but i love it!!!

Sincerely, Ania

Space Echo we use on Wurli and Rhodes pianos. It is pretty cool!

Effects Pedal heaven!

Bong Hits For Jesus Interview!

Our today's post is dedicated to our friends, a band Bong Hits For Jesus! A local band from Philadelphia that is so hot right now!

We have been friends for a long time and are so excited for them to experience all this cool things that are going on :) Yesterday's afternoon we had a chance to chat with Steve, a band leader, about what's going on with them :) ( a little video you can find at the end of a post)

Well, they have been working with David Ivory (!!!!) on their new EP "Low Rent Hustlers" that is coming out this Saturday, August 25th. WE LOVE THE ARTWORK for the EP and can't wait to hear the tracks. Check out their website http://bonghitsforjesus.net for more info!

Also they are going to be performing at Hemp Heals Festival in Philadelphia on August 25th with such great bands as Sublime with Rome and Cypress Hill.

Sublime was a legendary American rock band from Long Beach, California, formed in 1988. The band’s line-up, unchanged until their breakup, consisted of Bradley Nowell (vocals and guitar), Eric Wilson (bass guitar) and Bud Gaugh (drums and percussion).  Lou Dog, Nowell’s dalmatian, was the mascot of the band. Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996 and Sublime immediately split up. In 2009, the surviving members decided to reform the band with Rome Ramirez to bring back the band with a similar vocality that they had with Bradley.

Cypress Hill is an American hip hop group from South Gate, California. Cypress Hill was the first Cuban-American/Latino hip hop group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums, selling over 18 million albums worldwide. It is one of the most well-known groups in West Coast rap and was critically acclaimed for their first two groundbreaking albums.

This is one of a kind festival. Lots of music, many different industrial hemp vendors, speakers, hemp education, foods and drinks. The mission of the festival is to increase health awareness and to help people understand the connection between diet and most disease. And to promote a separation between industrial hemp and other uses of the cannabis plant. Organic and raw plant based foods can help prevent most disease by reducing environmental toxins and maximizing nutrition. Its more than a diet. Its a lifestyle. It is the The Hemp Heals Foundation’s duty to promote natural plant healing and healthy, eco friendly living. Money raised will go to Christina Pirello's Health Education Initiative.

For more information and tickets please go to  http://hemphealsphilly.com/

And here is a little video, an interview that we did with Steve!!! Enjoy it!

All the best!

Mercies, Cowgill, and GL at the Grape Room 8/21

Hi!

We were back to The Grape Room in Philly last night!! We love this venue! In a hip and cool part of Philly, with great live music, tones of awesome beer :) and great people who work there! Back in 2010 we had our debut record release party there... It was a great night and The Grape Room now is forever in our hearts :)

Little flash back :) to our record release party at THE GRAPE in July 2010!
What a lovely night of awesome music last night at The Grape Room ! The night started with Shaun Moyer on acoustic guitar.

We got invited to play the show by the band Mercies. They are from Suffield, CT and they are touring the East Coast now.

Well, we enjoyed their set so much!  With Rhodes piano on stage, with all members singing, ambient lighting - they created a magic atmosphere of combining past, present and future. I also was digging guys' haircuts : ) Very talented musicians and a tight group - we were very glad to support this band in our hometown and "home" venue. Check out their schedule here and if they are in the area definitely a worth journey for some great live band.

Then taking the stage were Cowgill, a six-piece indie rock band from Boston, MA!!! yeah!  I really liked the band!! they had a unique blend of instruments and were so pleasant to listen to!!! And yeah, there is a girl in the band, Leeann, she is a violin player. The band as well is on their summer tour :)

We would like to thank all the bands and the venue for great time!

And tonight we are playing an acoustic set at Rebel Rock in Philly. U can sit a table with a tap at it! This place is a breeding ground for insanity and I love it. Come on down and shake a leg or break one after u kill the keg at ur table.

See ya tonight

GL Rockin The Aggie Festival 2012

Hi!!

Sorry my post is delayed!

We were playing this awesomest show this Sunday. It was called Rockin The Aggie Festival in Pottsville, PA

What a lovely place. The ride there was so picturesque...

Rollin hills, just like on our cd cover picture!

Upon our arrival to a beautiful outdoor stage in a little valley Dan and Scott looked at each other and said: "oh, she didn't see it"... What are they talking about? And i stepped out of the van - and Oh WOW!!! Here they were, a dream of the seal from my dress, a match made in heaven - PINK DRUMS!!!!! And this is Karrie Collins, their owner.  She is a drummer in the band Adrenalyn.

Oh, Karrie is totally awesome! We hanged out with her and her band.

The show went great. The sound was very good. We are very grateful to the concert organizers Gary Gibson Jr of Garangatang Entertainment and the host Hank. They did such a good job on putting the whole thing together! And of course it was great to share stage with all other bands including Adrenalyn and our good friends The Sunset Villains that we always love to see!

Dan and our fresh mint Rhodes :)

SCOTT!!!!!!!

And ... what happened??!!! seal invasion!!!!! WATCH OUT!!!! :)

We are bringing the seals (and our seafoam green Fender Rhodes piano) to the Grape Room in Philly this Tuesday, August 14th! I am excited. We love Grape Room very much!!

All da best!!!!

Lil Skrillex and Glen Landing

Hello!

Lovely August day. Can you guys believe it's already August?!! and almost middle of it?

Well, well... I surely do not notice days going by while living in the land of "new tracks" and "delay designer"... The land of Loggic.

Danelectro guitar, me, and our Koteek DIY speaker :)

So here is it: my first song is finally here on our Soundcloud!

The name in English is Stars Stars, and in Russian Звездные Звезды (Zvezdnye Zvezdy as you can pronounce it)

Here are the lyrics:

звездные звезды
звездные звезды
звездные звезды
слушают волны
небо в вуали
в Сны приглашает
звездные звездыe
звездные звезды

I find the whole process quite fascinating. Coming from the world of recording only real instruments and mine are all analog :))) the electronic world is very new and FUN!

This song was written in one hour :) Dan made a beat. And then 1-2-3 Skrillex sole landed on my computer and we wrote the rest of stuff. Then i sang the melody line and was amazed how cool you can make it sound .... And i did use only some of basic stuff.... Then i recorded piano and guitar. I used my old lovely Lester piano and Danelectro guitar.

To document my journey i am going to write in a blog http://www.aniamaliakina.wordpress.com in Russian.

Also TONIGHT we are going to play a show in Pottsville PA at the festival Rockin the Aggie 2012 It is ALL AGES  and there going to be lots of music in the open air!! "FOOD, GAMES AND GIVEAWAYS!!!! AND ITS **BYOB** " (wow!!!!) We are going to play with our favorite friends The Sunset Villains!!!

OK! Gotta go may be finish a dress I am making for tonight :)) mmm, just kiddin, more likely "finish the beat"....

All the best to you, Ania

New Songs: Ania + LogicPro

My newly styled mic & favorite Russian poems...

Hi

Ania here. And I am going to be honest with you.

I am in love !!! .... with LogicPro :/  This is a computer program that have literally changed everything for me.  It is more than love, it is pure addiction.
I can not stop using it. I can not stop making music with it. It is amazingly simple and yet so POWERFUL!

LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Especially all the effects you can use, and especially on vocals!!!

In a progress of recording my new song 'Zvezdnie Zvezdy"

Now there is time when it seems to me all the pieces of the puzzle are coming together and i see a clear vision.

Now it's the time when there is going to be Russian Lyrics and songs in Russian with me singing. Yeah! glen landing is like a coin :) There have always been a Russian side of it, and finally it is time for it to be flipped!!!!

Well, it's tough to say that it will be glen landing songs... But what i am doing is a part of glen landing. So we decided to call it me, Ania, featuring glen landing!!! YEAH!

We had the program for 3 days and after spending these 3 days (mmm, like non-stop) with magic Logic, i have recorded two songs.

And i will call it Shelest EP 2012 (remember, it is in Russian :))))

I will upload the songs to www.soundcloud.com/glenlanding VERY SOON!!!

I just have to put the finishing "mastering" touches to it! I have never even thought i will/can ever do this. Now i feel i found a real JOY in it!!!

Recording lyrics on the fly, getting inspiration from Anna Akhmatova poems...

Thank you for your time.

And i will talk about it more in my future posts!!!
Stay tuned!
And look at the stars tonight - they are beautiful....

"Russian Party" Explained By Dan. Part 3

I may call these "Russian parties," but  the main common thread amongst all these students is that they can speak the Russian language.  They may be from Mongolia, Mondolvia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and many others.  Most of these countries were part of the Soviet Union until the 90's which meant the common language was Russian.  Even though they all have their own languages, they all can speak Russian.  Except me, I know like 5 words.

Being that some of these college students are from major cities and others from village like towns, the access to such parties is not a staple back home for all.  "Turn that music up man!!!!" says one party animal to another.  The bass is pumping and peeps are dancing.  The stereos are always big and pumping and they don't skimp out on the light show either.  With a box full of DJ lighting and smoke machines to boot, you'd think you were at a club by the ambiance of the room.  Instead of going out to the club, they just make the house into a club.

Glen Landing has been lucky enough to become the house band of these, "Russian Parties."  Providing live music for these house gatherings that don't usually start until the stroke of midnight.
Since Ania is from Belarus, she is GL's connect to all this.  If I didn't know Ania, then I'd probably never even know that this underground scene existed.  Every party that we have played is a little different.  Some are more of a listening party and sing-alongs, then others have been all-out bangers going until the sun's up.  The crowds of college students flocking to the scene, looking to rage and have a good time, all enjoy a live band.  Glen Landing comes and brings the noise to help add to the experiences that these students take home with them.  It is special for us to share this with them and equally special for them to experience it with us.

Music is the one common thread that all people in this world can relate to.  It is our link to one another. Without understanding one word spoken of another, you can still find  a relation in song.  I have found that their is many more casual musicians at these parties than at an "American" party.  Before and after Glen Landing rocks these parties, you could call it an open jam.  You'd be pleasantly surprised to see that probably half these party goers can play an instrument, so they rock out too!!!  I'm bringing the accordion next week to see who is truly legit!!!

My experiences have taught me that if u want to sing-along, then you should.  It's a, "everybody sings" community of friends.  From all walks of life and different nations, they sing loud and in with harmony together.  I don't understand what they are singing but, I've been told they are traditional folk or pop songs.  Sing loud while holding your brother or sister next to you, feeling the vibes and spreading the love and never the hate.  I hope i have clearly explained of what a "Russian Party" is, so I thank my foreign brothers for sharing in these great times with me and Glen Landing.  Till the next one...... this SATURDAY!!!!
